Like any computer system, the embedded system includes a processor, memory and IO(input and output) devices. The hidden computer is  the colored part of the picture below   integrated into the overall device with the interfaces with the outside world (sensor and actuator)

When asked the question "What is the best selling microprocessor? "Generally gets the answer: the Pentium with 92% market share. This answer is wrong because pentium actually represent 2% of the processors sold worldwide. What is the cause of the wrong answer? It is because if the pentium dominate the market for visible computers (desktop, laptops and workstations), these computers are only the visible part of the iceberg, and the overwhelming majority of processors are used in invisible computer systems called "embedded systems".

So what is an embedded system?
It is any device includes a computer That goal is not Itself has general-purpose computer, that is to say, invisible computers which are integrated into a large number of objects used to communicate (mobile phones, PDAs, digital TV, etc.), transportation systems (car, train, plane), the large and small infrastructure (control of nuclear power plants, industrial automation, etc.).
